WHAT CAUSES BACK PAIN?
Have you been experiencing a dull back pain which comes and goes? Are you unable to sit for long hours owing to constant sharp pain that lasts for weeks at a stretch? Back pain can be a result of various factors.
Sprain or Strain
Sprains or strains are the most common causes of low back pain. The back is involved in turning, twisting, moving, and bending. Thus, it is prone to injuries. Lumbar sprain is caused when the ligament is torn from the bones. Lumbar strain is caused when the muscles fibers are stretched beyond their limit. Lumbar strain or sprain can be debilitating.
Spinal Nerve Compression
When the spinal nerve root is pinched, compressed, or entrapped, it becomes inflamed, and the brain interprets it as pain. Some of the different disorders that cause nerve compression include a thickened ligament, osteophytes, and a herniated disk.
Degenerative Disk Disorder
As you age, simple activities such as sitting for a long period, picking up things from the ground, walking a short distance can cause pain. Degenerative disk disorder or osteoarthritis of the spine refers to the signs of wear and tear of the spinal disks. While everyone’s disk is prone to regular wear and tear, not everyone feels pain.
Herniated Disk
Also known as a slipped disk, a herniated disk is an injury to one of the disks presents between individual vertebrae. A herniated disk irritates the nearby nerves which result in weakness, numbness, or pain in arms or legs. While these symptoms are present in some people, others don’t experience any symptoms at all.
Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction
The sacrum is the keystone of the pelvis. The sacrum and the ilium meet at the sacroiliac (SI) joints. The SI joint is supported by strong ligaments and is not designed to move much. Small movements at the SI joint helps in bending and shock absorption. Dysfunction in the sacroiliac joint leads to low back pain or leg pain. Too little movement, inflammation, or too much movement of the SI joint can produce pelvic pain.
Spinal Tumor
A spinal tumor is an uncommon cause of back pain. It can be malignant or benign and can originate in the spine or migrate from other body parts. When the tumor occurs in the spine, it can cause significant disability. This is because the growth of the spine tumor leads to impingement of the spine; thus causing pain, neurological problems, or even paralysis.
Spinal Infection
Spinal infection leads to headache, fever, chills, back pain, stiffness, tenderness, and numbness. There are many possible causes of spinal infection, such as:
- Syphilis
- Viruses
- Bacterial abscesses
- Tuberculosis
- Fungal infection
- Parasitic infections
Back pain is not a disorder; rather, it is a symptom of an underlying problem. Get in touch with Dr. James Grant to get rid of acute or chronic back pain and live a pain-free life.
